Projects around the house vary in difficulty, and DIY is not for everyone, so before you get inspired by a design show on TV and take a sledgehammer to your bathroom, make sure you know what you’re signing up for and that you choose a project that matches with the time, effort and skill set you can offer.
Easy Weekend Projects
Get your backyard summer-ready: Check the pool chemicals. Blow up the floaties. Weed the lawn and trim the trees. Depending on how large your backyard is, you may need to
Paint an accent wall: For the most impact with the least expensive price tag, paint a wall. Whether you want an accent wall or want to go bold with a whole room, a fresh coat of paint gives a room a whole new look. Always start with a clean wall then tape the ceiling and baseboards before rolling on a first coat. Cut into the edges with a quality paintbrush and then do another coat of paint from the roller. Clean out the garage: Maybe you’ve been piling boxes in the garage for years or you’re determined to be able to park a car inside. Whatever your reason, you’re not alone in having a messy garage. The National Association of Professional Organizers found that 50 percent of homeowners said their
Weeklong Projects
Build garden beds: Maybe being at home has made you take up a new hobby. Transplant your container garden and plant new seeds just in time for summer. Using 2x8 boards, you can create raised garden beds to fill with soil and plants. While you can plan for irrigation from the beginning, watering manually with the hose is also an option.
Give your bathroom a facelift: You don’t have to do a full bathroom overhaul to give the room a spruce up. While replacing the bathtub and countertops may be labor-intensive, changing out some of the smaller fixtures isn't. Consider changing out lighting, mirror, faucet, and even the linens for a quick refresh. As for the vanity, if it’s wood, consider repainting it and purchasing new hardware for the drawers and cupboards.
Month-Long Projects
Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets: Replacing your kitchen cabinets entirely can cost thousands of dollars and can snowball quickly into several more kitchen projects than you signed up for. But painting your current cabinets, provided they’re in decent shape, can give your kitchen a modern feel and some TLC, all for a few hundred dollars and some sweat equity. Preparation is the majority of the work. Rough sand and then wipe down the cabinets with trisodium phosphate (TSP), available at hardware or paint stores. Make sure you use a good primer and lacquer or latex paint designed for cabinets.
Replace Your Flooring: Removing old carpet or tile and installing new flooring is not for the faint at heart. This home renovation project takes time, grit, and patience, as well as some practice, but it’s not an unapproachable project. First, do some planning to make sure you’re ready. How will you move your stuff around to accommodate for flooring replacement? Will you move your things into one half of the house while you work on the other, or move everything into a mobile storage unit? How will you deal with demolition? If you’re disposing of old carpet or breaking up old tile, you may need to rent a dumpster that can accommodate the construction materials. Visit our dumpster rental page to check out
Based on your budget and your needs, choose a material that works best for your lifestyle — from vinyl and tile to wood, laminate, or carpet. Don’t forget to bake in the costs for extras like grout, spacers, foam padding, or other adhesive and prep products. Installation of flooring varies widely depending on your material of choice so follow all the directions on the products and watch several tutorials before you venture out on your own.
